Outcomes for participants are:
- to identify the staff variability in UDL readiness existing within participants' own educational institutions
- to develop engagement strategies for educators at all readiness levels in learning about and applying the principles of UDL
- to create a goal-oriented plan to address the needs of all staff using multiple means of engagement
- to develop tools to improve communication with educators regarding UDL implementation
Mintie and Schultz will draw from their journey navigating learner variability among teachers while leading UDL implementation at Woodworth Middle School. They will describe three types of teacher-learners, sharing strategies to engage each type of teacher-learner: jetlagged, who feel UDL is just one more piece of "baggage" to carry through their day; the taxiing, who feel they are ready to move but may not yet have the knowledge or skills to take off; and the soaring, who have the knowledge and skills but still need occasional refueling to sustain flight. They will also provide conversational protocols to help keep discussions productive throughout the implementation process.
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own staff's variability and develop their own plans for multiple means of staff engagement.
